TAXI of AMD is the physical layer for 100
Mbps multi-mode fiber transmission. It is specified in the ATM
Forum, ATM User-Network Interface Specifications 3.0. The private
UNI does not require the operation and maintenance complexity
or link distance provided by telecommunications lines. TAXI
takes advantage of existing chips for the FDDI LAN system of
cell transport. It uses the same physical media as FDDI and
the same lasers, cabling and AMD TAXI chips.
TAXI has the same data rate (100 Mbps) as
FDDI, but it does not use the ring architecture. Links are full-duplex
point-to-point, carrying 53-byte ATM cells with no physical
framing structure.
